This type of essay is also known as “agree or disagree” essays, asked frequently in the writing exam. Students must write this an essay during the examination under following ways:
- Understand the Question
- Plan the Essay
- Write the Essay
Understanding an Essay
In an examination, the writing task 2 starts with a statement. Then, opinion about the statement is asked. The typical words that might be used in an opinion essay are as follows:
- What is your opinion?
- Do you agree or disagree?
- To what extent do you agree or disagree?
A key reason many students score low in Writing Task 2 is unable to understand the question properly. As a result, many students score Band 6 score in spite of good English proficiency in writing.
In order to understand the question completely you have to identify the following three words in the question:
- Topic Word
- Limiting Words
- Instruction Words
Topic Words: From the topic words examinee understand the general subject of the question.
Limiting words: These words help to identify the specific topic to write. In opinion questions, they define the opinion stated in the statement.
Instruction words: The instruction words come after the question statement. The students have to make clear about the opinion in the essay they write.
